Warren writes: We are writing you to request your help in locating information on a young man from Wellington, Kansas, who died at sea, in the closing days of World War II.
What we are looking for is information about his school years before joining the Navy, and a photograph from the school annual. He died when the U.S.S. Spence, DD-512, capsized, and sank during Typhoon Cobra in the Phillipine Sea. We are preparing a biography based on Glen's life, and service, to our nation. Sadly, he served less than 11 months before losing his life.

I ENLISTED IN 1946 AFTER RECEIVING 12 4F DRAFT NOTICES. BEING BLIND IN THE RIGHT EYE SINCE THE AGE OF 4 BUT I WANTED TO JOIN FOR THE GI BILL. I TALKED MY WAY INTO THE ARMY. I SERVED 18 MONTHS AT FT.SAM ,TEXAS AND WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED. MY MISTAKE WAS TO JOIN THE ARMY RESERVE BECAUSE IT LOOKED LIKE WE WERE GOING TO WAR WITH RUSSIA. I STARTED MY COLLEGE AT WICHITA U. AND FT. HAYS STATE. IN 1950 I WAS CALLED TO ACTIVE DUTY FOR THE KOREAN WAR. I WAS LUCKY TO BE SENT WITH 2000 OTHER RESERVES TO FT. LEONARD WOOD MO. TO OPEN CAMP AND START TRAINING MEN. THE DRAFT WAS ON SO I ONLY HAD TO SERVE A YEAR. WHEN I GOT OUT I WAS IN SALES AND IN 1988 MY WIFE AND I WAS EMPLOYED BY THE MENNINGER FOUNDATION IN TOPEKA WORKING WITH THE MENTALY ILL. AFTER 6 YEARS WE RETIRED AND SINCE THEN I HAVE WORKED WITH THE COWLEY COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH, TAUGHT SCHOOL FOR 4 YEARS IN WINFIELD AND ARKANSAS CITY SCHOOL. AND RETIRED AGAIN.

Robert C. Howard, class of 1945, was in the Merchant Marine from the end of the summer (1945), for three (3) years, travelling to Europe, Central America and Asia, a very happy person. The next four (4) years were of undergraduate studies at the University of Kansas, including Air Force
ROTC, Robert was in the Air Force as a very proud 2nd Lt. and later a 1st Lt.
serving in Korea for 18 months and in Japan for the last 6 months of his 2 years of active duty. He returned to K.U. to study law, then additional law studies at S.M.U. in Dallas, TX, and then, with his wife lived for 30 years in Latin America where Robert was in the legal practice using the Common Law of
the U.S. [K.U.] and the Civil Law of the Latin American countries, from his S.M.U. studies. In 1990 he retired and now lives in St. Petersburg, FL.
Robert extends best wishes to everyone at Wellington High School, the "very best school he could have ever had the good fortune to have attended."

Division. and has already been on one overseas deployment with the 31st

and gave humanitarian aid to natural disasters in the Philippines and

regions such as Ar Ramadi and Hit. They will be operating as a Mobile Assault
